9th Class Paper Rechecking vs Recounting Rules
In Punjab boards, rechecking and recounting are the same service under one fee. The board’s own form settles it: “Rechecking means recounting not remarking.” What students actually want — a fresh evaluation by a second examiner — is called re-marking, and it is not available as a candidate right.
Why the confusion exists
Board notifications are titled “Rechecking / Recounting Procedure.” Students read that slash as a menu. It is a definition. No Punjab board runs a separate recounting counter, fee head, or form.
The line on the form that ends the argument
BISE DG Khan prints this on its rechecking form:
The answer book of a candidate will not be re-assessed under any circumstances as per decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. PLJ. 1996 SC 657.
That is a law-report citation printed by the board itself. The examiner’s award is final. No official reviewing your script can replace it with their own academic judgement.
What the officer is legally allowed to check

Every point is arithmetic, transcription, or custody. None is academic.
You must attend personally
The same form states that nobody on behalf of the candidate may see or examine the answer book. Your father cannot go in your place. A teacher cannot. Any agent offering to “handle” rechecking for a commission cannot legally be shown your script.
The refund most students never claim
If the board finds an error, the fee comes back. BISE DG Khan commits to it on the form. BISE Lahore confirmed full refund when it moved rechecking online. BISE Faisalabad repeated it for 2026: a revised result card is issued and the fee is refunded.
You are paying a deposit against the board’s claim that its arithmetic is correct.
When it is worth applying
Apply when a clerical error is plausible: a subject total short by an odd 8 or 15 marks, or a score one to three marks below a grade boundary or below 40%.
Do not apply because an examiner felt strict on subjective answers — that is exactly what the process is barred from touching. And ignore anyone claiming rechecking “usually adds 10 to 20 marks.” No board publishes any such figure.
Apply per paper, not per result.
What changes from 2027
In October 2025, BISE Lahore’s Controller of Examinations confirmed a move toward re-marking in place of rechecking, subject to cabinet approval. In August 2026, Punjab’s education minister announced full screen marking from the next academic year, with rechecking applications through a QR-code system.
Digital, segment-level marking removes most error classes a recount was built to catch. For the 9th Class Annual Examination 2026, none of it is in force yet. The rules above are the ones that apply to you.
